I am Madiha a nutritionist at The Kenko Life.

Ever heard the phrase “eat the rainbow”? It’s not just about pretty plates, it's about phytonutrients. What are Phytonutrients?

Phytonutrients (also called phytochemicals) are natural compounds found in plants that help keep them healthy and they do the same for us humans too. These aren’t essential like vitamins or minerals, but they can protect your body, support your immune system, and may even reduce the risk of chronic diseases.

Where Do You Find Phytonutrients?

In fruits, vegetables, herbs, whole grains, nuts, seeds, and legumes. The more colorful your food is , the more likely it’s packed with phytonutrients.

Here are a few common types:

  • Carotenoids – Great for eye health. Found in carrots, sweet potatoes, leafy vegetable tomatoes.

  • Flavonoids- Support heart health Found in berries, oranges, grapes, apples, onions, leafy vegetables.

  • Glucosinolates – Help your body detox Found in broccoli, cabbage, kale, cauliflower.

  • Saponins – Boost immunity Found in legumes like soya beans, chickpeas. Peanuts, quinoa and spinach

 Why does it matter?

Even though your body doesn’t need them to survive, phytonutrients offer some big health benefits like:

  • Fight inflammation

  • Act as antioxidants

  • Support brain and heart health

  • May help reduce cancer risk

  • Regulate hormones

  • Strengthen your immune system

You don’t need to memorize all the types, just aim to eat a wide variety of colorful plant-based foods every day. Think of phytonutrients as your body's bonus protectors.
